Preparation:
In a small painting medium cup, combine a small amount of equal parts of Painting Medium and Glazing Medium to be used as your ‘wipe-out' medium.

Step 1.
Enlarge and transfer the Little Imp pattern to your canvas with graphite paper.

Step 2.
With a mixture of Black and White acrylic, slightly darker than your canvas, use the detail brush to cover your pattern lines with this light, gray acrylic. Allow to dry.

Step 3.
Apply an extremely thin layer of your 'wipe-out'' medium to the canvas using a 1" brush. Then use the 1" brush to apply a very light application of Yellow Ochre to the entire canvas. (Notice your transfer lines are still visible!)

Step 4.
With the filbert brush, repaint the pattern lines with Yellow Ochre. Use the Yellow Ochre to also paint the shadow side of the face. Now diffuse the painting by using a dry 1" brush. Gently stroke the entire canvas to soften the image and press the paint into the canvas. This allows more layers of paint to be applied in future steps. This procedure is called diffusing.

Step 5.
Continuing with the filbert brush, use a mixture of Yellow Ochre and Cadmium Red Light to paint the shadowed areas of the face and neck. Use the 1/2" brush to underpaint the hair. Diffuse with a 1" brush.

Step 6.
Now, with a mixture of Cadmium Red Light and Burnt Sienna and Van Dyke Brown, intensify the shadowed areas of the face and neck and ear. With the small round brush, suggest the eyes, brows, nose and mouth. Lightly diffuse the entire canvas with the 1" brush.

Step 7.
Use various mixtures of Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna and a small amount of White to darken the hair, eyes, nose and mouth. The stripes on her shirt are various mixtures of Ultramarine Blue, White and Viridian Green. Add the tiny blue bands in her hair.

Step 8.
Now that there are several layers of color applied, use a soft cotton rag on the tip of your finger to remove ('wipe-out') paint in all areas receiving light. Remove paint from the frontal plane of the forehead, bridge of the nose, cheeks and the right side of chin. To a lesser degree use the rag to remove paint from the right upper lip, the depression between the nose and upper lip and the lower lip. Wipe out highlights in her hair and a tiny dot of light in each eye. When you're satisfied with your painting, use the detail brush and thinned color of your choice to sign your masterpiece. Enjoy!
